Having a talent agent career may seem like a too-good-to-be-true, “over the rainbow” career. However, there are some real possibilities in this industry and this is not only possible in Hollywood. You can be a talent agent even in your small town and anywhere there is someone you think is going to be the next big star. If this career appeals to you, read on and know the steps on how to become a talent agent.

Step 1: Get a Job and Acquire Experience

If you have the chance, try getting a job with an already established talent agent. This will help you acquire the knowledge and skills of the talent hunting business by watching what the established talent agents do. If you are good and easy to work with, you can get promotion easily.

If you can’t find a job in a travel agency, you may contact the actor’s guilds or unions for necessary information. Reputable talent agents have affiliation to at least one of them. Included in such unions are the Screen Actors’ Guild, Actor’s Equity, and The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Step 2: Learn the Business

Study how the talent agency business operates. You can find the necessary information from books written and published by an established talent agent or group of talent agents.

Determine if you have the knowledge and skills needed to become a successful talent agent. If you can recognize what a real talent is, then you have the right to become a talent agent. You should also be able to recognize a poor performance in all areas - dancing, singing, acting etc. It would also help if you have a performing experience. If you don’t, acquire the knowledge by watching a lot of films and TV shows and by attending the theater frequently.

Step 3: Develop the Personality

You should possess the unique talent agent’s personality. You should be outgoing, driven, arts-oriented and you have to see the talent other people do not see. You should also be good at sales because much of the talent agent’s job involves selling their talents to casting director and crew.

Step 4: Develop the Necessary Skills

Make sure you have good telephone and negotiation skills. Most of the time, you will be spending hours on the telephone negotiating and closing deals for your clients. This means you are required to thoroughly understand what a typical actor’s deal contract looks like. You should be able to get blank copies from the actor’s unions.

Step 5: Grab Every Opportunity!

Always be in the lookout for potential clients. This is possible by attending plays and performances regularly. Once you feel you are already fully-equipped to work effectively as a talent agent, look for possible job openings in some established talent agencies. If you can’t find one in your area, it is also possible for you to open up your own talent agency. However, this is the time when you need to build your own client base. Advertise in different publications and create your own website to gain attention from casting people and actors.
