One of the most honorable and rewarding careers anyone could choose in their life is to be a teacher. Education is about more than information. It’s about empowering children and instilling morals and ideas in them that will allow them to make the most of the life ahead of them. The first thing you should consider doing is getting involved in classrooms or in a program that deals with children within the age group you are considering teaching. There are a number of programs available that can help you do exactly this. Some of these programs include American Reads/American Counts, Everybody Wins, and Learning Leaders.
In order to do this, you may need to seek out financial aid programs and incentives. There are literally hundreds of services available that offer funding for people who wish to attend college, and many programs are offered by the government. It may take some time and work to find many of these sources, however, it’s very possible to attend school with very little out of your own pocket. One such resource include the Federal Student Aid program. For information, simply call the U.S. Department of Education at (800)-4-FED-AID. Or visit their website at http://www.studentaid.ed.gov/
The first major step you will need to take is to get your certifications. There are various certifications you will need starting with will be to earn a minimum of your bachelor’s degree. Some states require you to have a post-baccalaureate or even a master’s degree in order to teach elementary school. Secondary subjects will require a degree in the area you wish to teach in addition to completing an accredited and approved education program which fulfills the required student teaching and practicum requirements.
Once you have finished all of the steps listed above, you can begin the real work. The next step is to find employment. This can be one of the hardest parts for most people as teaching jobs aren’t easy to find most of the time, especially if you wish to teach near where you currently live. It may require moving to a completely different town or city, or even a completely different state. To get started, a few resources to help you with your search are Education World’s Employment Center, National Teacher Recruitment Clearinghouse, JobsinSchools.com, and K-12Jobs.com.
